When visiting a new town, it can often be overwhelming with the amount of choice - especially when it comes to eating out. Some guests may be looking for the perfect romantic date night spot while others need a family friendly atmosphere with outdoor space.
We have decided to highlight different genres of dining experiences from a locals perspective. This blog will feature Mexican restaurants/taco spots in St. Augustine.
Casual Mexican: A look at some of our favorite taco/ burrito spots that are family friendly and won’t break the bank.
Mojos Tacos - Located in the Davis Shores neighborhood, Mojos tacos are bursting with flavor and their extensive menu is unlike any other causal taco spot. From arepas to fresh salads they are defiantly one of the house favorites. Their signature “double decker” style tacos are a soft shell and hard shell stuck together with melted cheddar cheese and served with with fresh salsa. Local tip: order your taco “vegan style” and you can get their signature double decker with either vegan cheese or guacamole instead of cheddar.
Highlights - Open for breakfast at 9AM! Their breakfast burrito is a fan favorite and its an easy on-the go grab before headed to the beach or a day out and about town. Mojos has both indoor and outdoor seating as well as a kombucha on tap and great canned beer selection consisting of mostly Florida breweries.
Osprey Tacos - Located in the Davis Shores neighborhood, Osprey Tacos puts a creative twist on ordinary tacos. With a causal picnic table style atmosphere and many carnivore and vegetarian options, they have something for everyone. Favorites include “the sprout” which consists of crispy brussel sprouts and a black bean pure, topped with pickled onions, cotija cheese and baja sauce and the “pork fried rice ” which is topped with crispy rice, scallion, hoisin and sriracha aioli. Note that Osprey only has outdoor seating, which is covered from the elements but if you prefer to sit inside, you would have to head to the brewery next door.
Highlights: Located directly next to Old Coast Ales which has an amazing beer selection, including the most delicious hazy New England Style IPA around. You can order at Osprey and enjoy your food next door at the brewery which has live music most evenings.
Taco my Blessing - Located in the West King neighborhood, Taco my Blessing is located just past downtown, which makes is a hidden gem and a local favorite. Although it may be a food truck , don’t let that fool you - here you will find authentic Mexican tacos, burritos and tortas. Their three taco special for 10.99$ is an easy go-to (we prefer the fish) and you always find yourself eating all three! Located on the patio of brewery, they offer outdoor dining with a casual family friendly environment. Visit on a taco Tuesday!
Highlights: Located on the patio of Bog Brewing Co. which is open 7 days a week, Bog features unique beer offerings from sours to pilsners.
Buritto Works - With two locations, one located on A1A beachside and the other on St. George Street in downtown, you can enjoy a taco after a day at the beach or after exploring the historic sites of St. Augustine. Known to the locals as simply “taco shop” - they are famously known for the U.F.O. which is a crunchy taco wrapped in a flour tortilla for a yummy hand-held cheesy circle of deliciousness.
Highlights - The beachside location is all outdoor seating with vibrantly painted picnic tables which creates a funky atmosphere for you and the whole family.
Date Night Mexican: When you are looking for a sit-down dinner or a vibrant atmosphere.
Casa Reina - Located in the heart of downtown St. Augustine, Casa Reina is located and in a historical building that was once the home of the Hamblen family spanning over 120 years. The building has been newly renovated for a stunning atmosphere overlooking the Matanzas River. Here you will find traditional Mexican dishes as well as signature seafood and an extensive tequila menu. If you are looking for a high end date night with a view - this is the spot for you!
Highlights: Exceptional margaritas and tequila menu. Upscale atmosphere with beautiful decor. Check out the concrete bar, its the same builder who made our Villa sinks!
Casa Maya - When you are looking for a fun vibe just to sip on a craft margarita and listen to live music or try your hand at salsa dancing, this is the place for you. Casa Maya has live music every night of the week making it a favorite for a quick cocktail and appetizer before hitting the town (or making it your last stop of the evening) - take note that Casa Maya does not take reservations so you need to be flexible when visiting, you could walk right or you may need to wait it out at the bar.
Highlights: Craft cocktails. Open until 11pm on Friday/Saturday, often with great live music.
